The Deputy Project Director is supported by the Environmental Characterization & Remediation Group who is responsible for these areas:


Regulatory Compliance

Teams in this focus area are responsible for day-to-day interactions with the regulatory agencies, the public, Tribes, and other stakeholders. Personnel in this focus area are responsible for providing consistent interpretation of regulatory requirements and ensuring that the project remains in compliance with all applicable regulations.

Analysis and Assessments

Teams in this focus area are responsible for the developing technical strategies and using consistent technical methodologies (strategic decision analysis, conceptual modeling and human health and ecological risk assessments) throughout the project.

Information Management

This focus area is responsible for coordinating sample management, the geographic information system, and other databases and computer support systems.


Remedial Actions

Teams in this area are responsible for the investigation, stabilization, and cleanup (if necessary) of potential release sites that are not in canyons or material disposal areas.

Corrective action activities implemented by these teams are arrived at through interaction with the Department of Energy (DOE), the public, and the Administrative Authority.

Canyons

Teams in this focus area are responsible for investigating potential release sites in the19 major canyon systems at the LANL, including studies on sediments, surface water, and groundwater.

Groundwater Investigations

This focus area is responsible for implementing LANL's hydrogeologic work plan including installing test wells, sampling the water from the wells, and analyzing the sample results to see if there are impacts on groundwater from LANL operations.


Material Disposal Areas

Teams in this focus are responsible for the investigation, stabilization, and cleanup (if necessary) of potential release sites found in material disposal areas at LANL.

Corrective action activities implemented by this team are arrived at through interactions with the DOE, the public, and the Administrative Authority.

Project Staff Profile

Personnel who work on the project come from many disciplines throughout LANL and DOE. Environmental scientists, engineers, computer system specialists, geologists, hydrologists, health physicists, administrative and support staff and many others combine their unique skills and strive to address the complex issues of cleaning up contaminated sites
